This is often said, but do shorts really have that much power? Why do shorts supposedly possess such power, when longs don't seem to? In order to profit, shorts need more and more sellers just as longs need more and more buyers to profit.

I guess I just don't buy that shorts, by taking the enormous risk of shorting hundreds of thousands or millions of shares can actually drive a stock's price down and keep it there. The collective risk is stupendous (like naked call selling).

I don't claim to have more knowledge than the collective minds here, so would everyone please feel free to inform me of why and how my thinking is wrong? Thank you.
