"Every atrocity committed by man has been done so in the name of religion or along divisive religous lines."

A broad statement, and in my opinion an untrue but popular myth. I would say economics, hatred and greed (including greed for power) have played a far more central role, and a good many that did involve religion were against a particular religion (usually judaism), not for one. I would cite as examples the great atrocities of the 20th century such as Hitler (not motivated at all by religion), Stalin, Pol Pot, Mao, the Japanese POW atrocities and the inter-tribal genocide common in Africa. The 20th century wars - The Russian revolution, WWI, the Chinese revolution, WWII, the Korean War, and the Vietnam war, and Desert Storm - all had nothing to do with religion.
