LEAD Series


(LEADership Exploration And Development)

The LEAD Series is a chance to learn from experienced LEADers working in education, business, non-profit and government. To assist you in further developing your LEADership potential, you will be able to hear first hand about the challenges these experienced LEADers have encountered and the path that led them to their current LEADership role. You’ll also have an opportunity to ask any questions you may have that are relevant to your LEADership development.

The 2005 LEAD Series will be held one Wednesday evening per month during the Winter and Spring Quarters from 5:00-6:00 p.m. Light refreshments will be provided.


January 12:
Presenter: Ronald Loveridge, Mayor, City of Riverside
Location: Terrace Room A (University Commons)
About the Presenter: Ron Loveridge has served as Mayor of Riverside from 1994-Present. From 1965-1994, Mr. Loveridge was a professor of political science at the University of California, Riverside. He is President of the League of California Cities and has been President of the League’s Inland Empire Division. Mr. Loveridge holds a BA in Political Science from the University of the Pacific, and an MA and Ph.D. in Political Science from Stanford University.

February 2:
Presenter: Ofelia Valdez-Yeager, Assistant to the Superintendent, Riverside County
Location: Terrace Room A (University Commons)
About the Presenter: Ofelia Valdez-Yeager is the Assistant to the Riverside County Superintendent of Schools. She previously served as the Administrative Assistant to Mayor Loveridge for Youth, Education and Crime Issues and Executive Assistant to the Superintendent at Riverside Unified School District. She has served in numerous community LEADership roles including being the first Latina elected to the Riverside Unified School District Board of Trustees, serving as the President of the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, Vice President of the Hispanic Education Advancement Foundation Board, Co-Chair of the Ensenada Committee of the International Relations Council, and was a founding member of the Latino Network. Ms.Valdez-Yeager also serves on the Riverside Country Library Foundation, Mission Inn Foundation, City of Riverside Human Resources Board, Altura Credit Union Board and the board of the Concilio for the Spanish Speaking. She has received numerous awards for her service including “Influential Latina of the Year” by the Hispanic Lifestyle Magazine, “Woman of Achievement Award” from the Black Voice Foundation, the YWCA and the Hispanic News and the prestigious Ohtli award from the Mexican Government Department of Exterior Affairs. She was born in Tayoltita, Durango, Mexico and graduated from UC-Riverside with a BA degree in Spanish in 1969 and a Teaching Credential in 1971.

March 2:
Presenter: Rick Hodge, President, Inland Empire Chapter of the American Society for Training and Development
Location: Terrace Room A (University Commons)
About the Presenter: Rick Hodge is President of the Inland Empire chapter of the American Society for Training & Development and is employed as the Dean of the Community Education Center for the Pasadena City College. While at Chaffey Community College, Mr. Hodge co-founded and chaired the Entrepreneur Network, the first network of its kind in the Inland Empire for high school and college students aspiring to start their own business ventures. He also created the Chaffey Corporate Academy to deliver quality education programs and coordinated the Craft Training program funded by a San Bernardino County Grant. He was nominated for the LEADer of Distinction Award for 2002 by the Business Press of the Inland Empire.

April 6:
Presenter: William Saito, President & CEO, I.O Software
Location: Terrace Room A (University Commons)
About the Presenter: William Hiroyuki Saito is the co-founder of I/O Software, Inc. and he is recognized as one of the foremost policy and technical experts in information security. Mr. Saito has been honored as the “Entrepreneur of the Year” by Ernst & Young/NASDAQ/USA Today and as the “Entrepreneur of the Year” by the Asia Business Association. He also received the 100th Anniversary Centennial Award from America’s largest bilingual Japanese daily newspaper. He has testified before congress and has been on television segments including CNN, CNBC, Nikkei, TechTV, PBS, and NPR. He serves on the UC-Riverside Foundation Board of Trustees and has written or been a contributor to numerous publications and books including “Security Matters” and “Computation Algorithms for Fingerprint Recognition”.

May 4:
Presenter: Candace Hunter Wiest, President/Chief Operating Officer Inland Empire National Bank

About the Presenter: Candace Hunter Wiest is the President/Chief Operating Officer of the Inland Empire National Bank (IENB). Ms. Wiest’s career path has been unconventional. She married at 18, had three children by age 22, and became the family’s sole provider when the youngest child was a few weeks old. She applied for a clerical support position with an independent insurance agency and was eventually promoted to bookkeeper, office manager, and then a licensed agent. Under her LEADership IENB has been named a “Super Premier Performing Bank” three years in a row and as a “Bauer 4 Star Bank” by Bauer Financial Inc. for twenty consecutive quarters. Ms. Wiest is currently the Chair of the Greater Riverside Chamber of Commerce and the Immediate Past Chair of the Raincross Club and previously served as the Director of the Mission Inn Foundation, President of the Inland Empire Lenders Community Development Corporation, Director of the Inland Empire Council of Boys Scouts, and founding Director of the Inland Empire Chapter of Make a Wish. She is also involved with the A Gary Anderson School of Management Advisory Board, YWCA Professional Women’s Council, Cal State San Bernardino’s Center for Women Entrepreneurship, and is a trustee of the La Sierra University Foundation. In 2003 Ms. Wiest was elected a director of the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco, the first woman to be elected as a Class A Director in their 90 year history. She has received numerous awards including Soroptomist Gold Key Award (2004), “Businessman of the Year Award” by the National Republican Congressional Committee (2002, 2003 and 2004), the Duke Financial Group Award (2002 and 2003), “One of Twelve Women Who Make A Difference” by Inland Empire Magazine (1998), “Woman of Distinction” by the Business Press (1998), “Woman of Achievement” by the YWCA (1995), and the “Distinguished Citizen Award” (2002) by the Boy Scouts.

June 1:
Presenter: Frank Olsen, President/CEO of Q Television Network

About the Presenter: Frank Olsen is President/CEO of Q Television Network, a subsidiary of Triangle Multi-Media Limited, Inc.. Mr. Olsen has been in the broadcasting industry for over 35 years and has helped shape minority programming. He created Q Television Network to provide quality programming for and about the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender communities around the world. Mr. Olsen previously launched the first radio station focused on African Americans and their culture in Seattle. He entered the television arena with a four-hour home shopping program which was the forerunner of the current home shopping channels. He was president of The Hospitality Movie Channel which he sold that business to Showtime/Viacom. In addition to his broadcasting ventures, Mr. Olsen has also worked in the LGBT communities, starting 17 clubs centered on LGBT entertainment. His wealth of experience in broadcasting and business, combined with his creativity, has helped him bring Q Television Network to a national audience and create the premiere LGBT television network of his dreams.
