Used to happen to me all the time when I was high flying, high risk, margin trading... I would try to let a margin call ride as long as possible, but at a certain point, the broker just market order dumps whatever they need to in order to cover the call. They could care less what it is, how thin the stock is, etc. it is all about the cash to cover the call.
