PLANETARY EFFECTS ON THE MARKETS?

There are a few cycle-based trading systems which try to take advantage of the supposed effect of planetary alignment on human psychology. But they never seem to answer two questions. First, what by means of what force do the planets act upon the earth? Second, just how strong is the effect of the other planets on the earth and its inhabitants?

As to the first question, I assume that the force in question must be gravity, since I cannot think of any other possibility.

Okay, but how much can or does the gravity of the other objects in the solar system effect us on earth? Not being able to find an answer from any of the cycle theorists, I went on a web search for answers, and found them at NASA's website.

The table below lists the gravitational pull exerted on the on the earth by the other objects in our solar system relative to the pull exerted by our sun. In other words, a value of .5 would mean that the object in question exerts half as much gravitational pull upon the earth as does the sun, while a 3.0 would mean the object in question exerts three times as much pull as does the sun.

Object Relative Gravitational Pull
Moon 2.21
Sun 1.00
Venus 0.000113
Jupiter 0.0000131
Mars 0.0000023
Mercury 0.0000007
Saturn 0.0000005
Uranus 0.000000001
Neptune 0.000000002
Pluto 0.0000000000001

What this table shows is that the gravitational effect of the sun on the earth is 8,849 greater than that of Venus, (the object with the third greatest gravitational effect), and the gravitational effect of the moon on the earth is 19,557 times that of Venus.

In other words, if the gravitational pull of Venus, (or, by extension, any of the other planets below it on this list), were to have an effect on human psychology, then the effect caused by the sun simply rising in the morning would be 8,849 times greater, and that of the moon would be 19,557 times greater.

To be a bit more blunt about it, if the gravity of Venus had a measurable effect on human psychology, then I'm pretty sure we would all go crazy everytime the sun rises and/or sets, and we'd all go stark raving mad every time the moon passed by the earth.

Obviously, the sun and the moon exert very definite effects on the the earth, so cyclical systems based on moon phase or solar flare activity may well have some validity. But I think it's pretty obvious that systems based on the alignment of other objects in the solar system are probably hogwash.
