boog: seems very likely from what you posted that a Royalty or license fee is paid to the patent owner on some basis, perhaps by time frame or gallons sold or some other measure. It seems logical that the owner of the patents is getting $$$ on some time or volume basis. Ain't transparency wonderful, no one can be sure.

Maybe one should ask SB when he calls him?
