okay, i get your premise... but under the Hate Crimes statutes, they are a protected group, just like racial minorities, yet white heterosexual males are not afforded equal protection under the law as a group. (i realize the reason for that, but rules is rules) It is just one example of how they ARE afforded a different status, so the idea that they are automatically granted the same positive rights as another group is still what is in play. If everyone is created equal the Hate Crimes statutes could be unconstitutional, eh?
For example, marriage laws are allowed to violate people's religious freedoms in some cases... the laws against bigamy violate the religious freedoms of the muslims yet we enforce the ban on it. The "rights" of marriage as a partnership expression are not always equal across all groups, they have been bent to conform the wishes of the people. And unbending them may have some unintended consequences.
I say just let 'em get married, and move on to a more significant issue. Such as football season is coming soon, and will Brett Favre play again this season?
