Well if this Sanders character is like Stalin in that respect then he was a real idiot.
What is the harm if he have some engineers working on alternate (more simple) process just in case? So now they get set back another 6 months or more. Haven't they figured out it's all a moving target? They did a much better job with Athlon, bringing it along slowly.
