I figure that he has not dealt with this kind of objection to his appointment before. He may have thought it would be in the best interest of the process to stand down so there wouldn't be an ongoing disruption by the faithful, or he may have just said screw it.
Either way, I am not surprised, and I have no doubt his replacement will be fully qualified as well.
