I heard that comment from another teacher/engineer type, too.... then I read the Paul Erdos Biography The Man Who Loved Only Numbers, about Kurt Godel in Godel, Escher and Bach and about Bertrand Russell and John Nash. All brilliant mathematicians and they were anything but lazy.
