No doubt you learned a lot in the steam operations in the NAVY! Good for you!
I had a similar experience to yours, trying to invent something new, only to find it hiding out in the bushes ten years later. Funny thing was the DOE grant reader said my idea was too Edisonian and unlikely to ever be achievable, some nonsense about requiring a brave Chem Eng to pull it off with and needing an Edisonian approach to accomplish it. 10 years later I found what I had ask for the grant money to help invent, was already on the market at the time, we just had not run a cross it yet, LOL!
I grew up with a father that was PE, and a brother 12 years older, with a PhD in Physics. I went straight into the industrial machinery market as a sales rep / field technician out of HS in the metal finishing and parts cleaning area, skipped college till I was 35, but by the time I hit the university, I was like a sponge, with a ton of hands on practical experience, and thirsty for missing theory.
Did you know the guy that invented the H-NMR (or CAT scan?) had no college degree! A guy from Australia. One day he was lecturing a room full of PhDs on how to use his invention, when they discovered he had no college degree, they gave him an honorary PhD. Seems they could not let him lecture them, if he did not have equal credentials, LOL!
Hang in there with the Physics, it is a great core science!!! Wish I had more of it under my belt! But try to pick up some biochemistry if you can, as Borg technology is the new frontier!!!
Trying to get my son to dig into that field of study right now, while he is college.
Sounds like you have a great future ahead you!
I am inclined to agree, at this point, that the critical area is the bearings. But from your posts it sure sounds like they have done their homework in that area, so let's hope it is not the Achilles heal!
I have not looked at the weight issues on the TTEG engine, but I know they have a partner working on a heavy truck engine test design in a JV partnership in China, with a firm that is owned by a Japanese firm, Mitsubishi, if IIRC.
I am very close to adding this one to my list of stocks to nibble on and watch! Thanks for bringing me up to speed so fast on this cool (HOT) engine, LOL.
