Its just a mass hysteria promoted by the self serving M&M and their lackeys. When it comes right down to it, only between 70 and 200 are involved at all. Thats a pretty insignificant, though vocal, percentage of the thousands of SPNG bagholders.

But it provides terrific entertainment and comic relief, IMO.
