The House Ethics Committee will hold a public hearing on alleged violations by former Ways and Means Committee Chairman Charles Rangel.
Rangel told reporters he welcomed the opportunity to testify.
“I am pleased that, at long last, sunshine will pierce the cloud of serious allegations that have been raised against me in the media,” he said.
The committee won’t reveal the precise charges against Rangel until next week.
However, the Associated Press, citing unnamed sources, reported that he is accused of misusing rent-subsidized apartments for political purposes; under-reporting income on financial disclosure statements; and using official stationery to raise money for the Rangel Center at City College of New York.
Rangel temporarily stepped down as Ways and Means chairman following the announcement of ethics investigations of several allegations, including failure to pay taxes on a home in the Dominican Republic.
Unfortunately for other Democrats, Rangel’s ethics trial will take place during the campaign season. Before the ethics charges surfaced, he had raised money for many Democratic candidates.
Rangel recently announced his plans to seek election to his 21st term in Congress.
