I dont' interpret it is ignorance - more like arrogance mixed with a bit of narrow-mindedness.

It's not so much that he doesn't know better about what he said, it is more that he doesn't have a clue what is going on outside of his clique of insiders.

I'm hoping for a come-uppance and hard reality check.
