Verizon Reports Fourth-Quarter Profit

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Verizon Communications Inc. (NYSE:VZ - News) on Thursday posted a fourth-quarter profit due to asset sales and strong demand at its Verizon Wireless unit.

Verizon, the largest U.S. telecommunications company, said it earned $3 billion, or $1.08 per share, compared with a loss of $1.5 billion, or 53 cents a share, a year earlier.

The year-ago results included $3.1 billion in special charges, mostly from an employee buyout program.
