ibd<> U.S. Stocks Stay Mixed In Late Trade

By VINCENT MAO, INVESTOR'S BUSINESS DAILY Posted 03:20 PM ET

Stocks remained stuck in neutral territory in late trading Thursday.

The Dow gained 0.4%, the NYSE composite 0.2% and the S&P 500 0.1%. The Nasdaq slipped 0.1% after having been up 1%. Bellwethers Apple (AAPL) and Baidu (BIDU) lost 1% each. Volume was again tracking mixed with NYSE lower and Nasdaq slightly higher.

STR Holdings (STRI) pulled back from its session high, but was still up 8% in heavy volume. The stock was up nearly 17% earlier. Analysts see its earnings surging 386% in the current quarter. The maker of solar encapsulants has delivered two prior quarters of triple-digit profit growth.

STR's Composite Rating is 80, which means a fifth of the market has a higher rating. The Composite Rating combines all five IBD ratings into one number.

On the downside, Nordstorm (JWN) reversed earlier gains and dropped 2% in heavy trading. The department store operator was up more than 5% intraday on news of better-than-expected same-store sales. Nordstrom also isn't a leader. Its Composite Rating is 70.

Online movie rental company Netflix (NFLX) also turned lower. It fell 2% after having been up nearly 4%. The stock regained its 50-day moving average Wednesday.

Chipmaker Lam Research (LRCX) erased earlier gains and lost 3% in brisk trading. The stock fell back under its 50-day moving average. Lam's Composite Rating is 80. A number of chip issues weakened after Wednesday's jump. The Philadelphia semiconductor index fell 0.9%.

Cree (CREE) and Skyworks Solutions (SWKS) lost 2% each after reversing lower.
