why not go back and start the chart in 1940 -- you will find that WAR YEARS account for the upticks in percentage of debt/GNP

unfortunately the remocrates and the depublicans are unable to restrain themselves while at the pig trough -- and spending bills were always attached to war funding -- a veto put the troops in danger -- so the pork bought the votes
