It is amazing how the management of companies change as a company grows. It seems to happen in waves as a company goes through growth and the nature of the challenges change with the size of the company.

The people that successfully deal with one class of challenges are not always able to adapt to the next class of challenges that confront them.

Some people are able to do that very well, Jobs, Dell, and Gates being the most obvious examples of people that took a company from garage startup to huge corporations.
