Bear raids come in many forms not always by shorts. In the same way some people make computer viruses just for shits and giggles, sometimes there's bear raids just for shits and giggles.

Many people who "sold for personal reasons" are (or will be) victims of the bear raid. (though they have only theirselves to blame for their own bad trading decisions of course).

Bear raids are also more effective when the overall market is scaring everybody. Makes for good buying opportunities though as my friend who bought at $1.51 can attest.
