GITMO interrogators confirm U.S. torture

NEW YORK, Jan. 1 (UPI) -- Interrogators at the U.S. naval base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, have routinely used inhumane methods that could be viewed as torture.

Some detainees were degraded by forcible enemas and sexual taunts from women, the New York Times reported Saturday.

Others were kept from lavatories so they soiled themselves, were chained to low objects with bright lights flashing in their eyes and subjected to tapes of Lil' Kim, Eminem and Meow Mix commercials at high volumes for hours right next to their ears.

One Saudi detainee was tranquilized, put in sensory deprivation garb with blackened goggles and put on a plane, supposedly taking him to the Middle East. Hours later he landed back at the base and was put in an isolation cell where he was subjected to harsh interrogation methods by agents he was encouraged to believe were Egyptian officials.

The disclosures from former interrogators, strain Pentagon, FBI and CIA claims that all detainees are treated humanely, the newspaper said.

It also said its interviews confirm a recent report by the International Committee of the Red Cross, which complained privately last summer to the United States government that these procedures at Guantanamo were "tantamount to torture."
