Back about ...geez must a been 15 years ago I worked for one week on the evening shift at IBM in Atlanta as a temp loading the tape machines. Made us wear a suit and tie no less. We would read a tape number off a CRT and then look in the tape library which was rows and rows of racks on wheels with 10's of thousands of tape reels. We would take the reel over to a few rows of about 50 tape machines and manually load them in. That was the whole job, feeding the machine. The programers/operators were in another area and we didn't get to talk to them.

And over in another area was the mainframe, which was rows and rows of cabinets on a white metal grate floor. Under the grate it was lit and you could look down and see all the cooling pipes. It was pretty cool for the late 80's considering a 20mhz 286 was a big thing back them. I would image most of that stuff is in a landfill by now.
