I had an interesting talk with some Hungarians a few days ago. The referendum for for dual citizenship was voted down by a wide margin and all the vote and Yushenkos noise acomplished was to increase ethnic tensions between Hungarians in Hungary and those in neighboring countries. This is particularly true in Romania although that is nothing new.

It will be interesting to see how long the EU can B.S. the Ukrainians into thinking that they will be allowed to cross EU borders freely. Slovaks and Hungarians I talk to are against it. The Ukrainian Mafia already has a lot of control over eastern Slovakia. If they do free up the borders there will be a HUGE immigration wave westward that will cause all kinds of problems for many EU countries. If there is a brief civil war that does not result in Russian occupation but splits the country in two parts what will the thugs in Brussels do? Create another country out of the poorest region of Ukraine where people make 30$ a month and let them into the EU? Let them starve? Without the Eastern half of Ukraine the western half will have many more economic trouble than it already does. Put them on welfare?

So far its just Sabre rattling in the big picture but if I see big troop build up or a quick civil war and then split into two parts giving Moscow the Crimea and the submarine bases it will be another sign to me that a big escalation of the war on terror is near.

I still think the West has plenty of room to cut and run from the Ukraine leaving a bigger mess than before all the noise about democracy. No doubt if they do it will be be with intense vilification of Russia setting the stage for the next phase of the war on terror. The west could care less about Ukraine other than being a pawn at the right place at the right time.
