You are very correct - we have allowed ourselves to get mired down in Afghanistan "nation building," which could take centuries. Afghanistan pales in comparison to Iraq in its importance to the US and on the world scene, so I very much believe we must go in for our own protection. The aftermath of the quick "victory" over the Taliban in Afghanistan does not give me much encouragement though.
