The biggest help was experience. I lost alot of money for several years before I learned how to be discerning in my investments. Running my own businesses also helps alot in recognizing what is a developing business and what is just a stagnant shell.
i've read near every book on the subject, any book will help- you've got to start somewhere. don't just count on one, read as many as you can- it's not about one book, or one guru, the more you read- and the more people you talk to: you start to recognize and realize the consistencies underneath: the underlying principles of successful investing; and of success itself.
another big point: it does not just take knowing what to do, but it takes the disciple to force those principles into practice. eventually they become habit, but until that habit is born, it takes grueling drive and motivation to force yourself to do it (just like a fitness routine)
much of being successful, is simply being a creature of good habit
being successful literally changed my whole personality.
actually, to be more accurate:
when I changed my thoughts, actions and attitude, I changed my very personality; and as a result of that change: I became successful.
I molded myself into a better human being, and I continue to do so. you either continue to become better, or you start drifting backward
more than books, my biggest help of all: was starting to surround myself with successful people. I'd ask for mentor-ship from others who I looked up to around me. if someone is worthy of looking up to, they are usually more than willing to help someone else become better as well
as far as books go, I'd recommend 7 habits, of highly effective people. investing books: the "for dummies collection" are often written by very qualified individuals. for daytrading and general market info, informedtrades.com has an excellent video series, the intelligent investor by ben graham is also good. security analysis is another by ben and mr. dodd. just start reading and don't stop, keep learning more and more. the more you surround yourself with it, the more it will start to become natural- almost second nature.
