Part of the problem with the ash is the Jet Stream folding back on itself in a reverse "S", which keeps the ash hovering over Britain and Europe. This Jet Stream pattern also led to the very cold and snowy winter in England, a place normally basked by the warmth of the gulf stream that goes North from Florida along the Eastern U.S, then heads towards Britain from southern Cape Cod.

Not to mention that the ash contains fluoride, which in excess, at least as hydrofluoric acid, can rot teeth and bones in cattle and people. Hence the need to keep the animals inside barns, and hope some heavy rains make their pastures safe again.

Yes, this is a Chicken Little, "The sky is falling" scenario. The volcano could stop tomorrow, and airlines are sending up planes to check for themselves if it's as bad as officials think.
