Volcanic ash causes travel chaos for second day

Today a pilot on the radio mentioned two things ..

1. The ash made the cockpit windshield opaque, he said it stripped paint off airplanes.

2. The ash contains sand and silica, which in the high temperature engines forms glass.

So you have a windshield you can't see through and potentially an engine taking time off for cocktails.
