If uVuMobile is an integral provider for the Sonic mobile solution, shareholders and potential investors should become aware of some things, that I am aware of as a close Sonic investor. A revolution is in the works for viewing movies/TV and really anything digital--Anytime, Anywhere:
1. Sonic is the only provider of a turnkey platform for multiple retailers out there. Their "powered by CinemaNow" platform is used by Blockbuster and (soon) BestBuy. This is no small potatoes. So just what is the big deal? The big deal is that this platform enables "Buy Once, Play Anywhere", which means mobile solutions--portability between devices. If you buy a digital on-demand movie you can play it on your internet-enabled TV, mediaplayer, PC, smartphone, gaming console, or through your new BluRay player.
From Sonic:
"Sonic is the only company supplying retailers with a turnkey solution to deliver new home video releases directly to consumers' living rooms through enabled consumer electronic devices. We look forward to the year ahead and to expanding our ecosystem to include new retailers and devices." http://www.sonic.com/about/press/news/2010/02/3q2010-financial-results.aspx
2. Mobility is what "Buy Now, Play Anywhere" is all about. BLockbuster (powered by Sonic's CinemaNow), has announced a couple of recent mobile phone partnerships that will include their BLockbuster on Demand feature in mobile phones:
T-MOBILE: http://www.homemediamagazine.com/blockbuster/t-mobile-offers-blockbuster-demand-movies-18462
Motorola:http://www.homemediamagazine.com/blockbuster/blockbuster-demand-deal-with-motorola-16766
Don't get too hung up on Blockbuster's financial condition--they will survive. And don't worry about Netflix--they will too, but they don't deliver digital content from PREMIUM MOVIES--the big moneymakers. Guess who does? CinemaNow and storefronts powered by CinemaNow.
But, it isn't just about mobile phones! Mobility is about portability between devices!:
Might these include technology from uVuMobile?
From the recent UVUM PR:
"uVuMobline, Inc., a mobility solutions and content aggregator today announced that they are collaborating with and building a number of mobile applications for Sonic Solutions® (Nasdaq:SNIC - News). The partnership will allow consumers with internet-enabled mobile phones to browse, purchase, and watch premium entertainment from Roxio CinemaNow™ powered services on a wide array of portable platforms. Users can purchase a full-length movie directly on their mobile phone, view it immediately, and then access the same content from other connected devices including PCs, HDTVs, and Blu-ray Disc players."
3. HERE'S THE POTENTIAL GOLD:
The goal of DECE www.decellc.com (a consortium of 6 of the 7 major studios, and another 40+ significant related companies--Microsoft, Cisco, Intel, Sonic, Adobe, Divx, others..) is to enable "Buy Now, Play Anywhere" to become a reality by creating standards--and a common file format, AND a common 'cloud' through which movies will be stored in a digital locker and accessed via the many devices by the consumer using those devices. There has to be a common database for all movies regardless of whether you got them through Amazon, or Vudu, or BLockbuster, or BestBuy--in order for those movies to play across all devices, which is the goal.
There is a very real possibility that if Sonic is the only company NOW offering a viable solution for portability (digital movies bought using their platform can be viewed on up to 5 different devices), the Sonic technology could become the same technology used by Neustar, the company chosen to manage the cloud for DECE! That means Sonic may be in line to receive transaction fees on every digital movie that is 'ported' to a device.
If uVuMobile is an integral part of enabling this mobility, might they too be in line to receive a piece of the purchase price of each future movie that is part of the Buy Now Play Anywhere ecosystem of devices? I don't know but it is a very tantalizing idea for a company selling at only a penny.
