Two friends, Tom Gaffney and Derreck Manteau, founded WEB Pay-Per-View in 1998.Both gentlemen had completely different personalities, educations, interests, hobbies, and occupations.Derreck Manteau- President and Chief Operating Officer- is a driven and determined, soft-spoken, always smiling, handsome man.He was raised in Falls Church, Virginia, a suburb of Washington D.C.He attended both Arizona State University and George Mason University and graduated with a degree in Economics.Derreck's interests include- airplanes and helicopters, scuba diving and hockey.He has a passion for animals.He has three dogs that are the loves of his life.
After graduating from college Derreck's father took him in as a partner in his Aerospace Company located in Fairfax, Virginia.While working with his fathers company, Derreck's economics degree started to payoff where he oversaw the company's international sales.
Moving on in life he transplanted to Phoenix, Arizona where he became the Senior Vice President of Metropolitan Financial – a mortgage banker.While at Metropolitan Financial, Derreck gained a strong interest in the Internet and started to explore different Internet applications such as "streaming media".
Tom Gaffney- Chief Executive Officer and Chairman- is an energetic, enthusiastic born leader or "boss".He was born in Bloomfield, New Jersey not far from New York City.He has always been an athlete, participating in baseball and football but had a passion and desire for boxing.Tom went on to have an outstanding amateur boxing career where he won several championships including the Middleweight Golden Glove Title and the Arizona and Western Regional United States Middleweight Title.
Like Derreck, Tom worked with his father where they owned and operated several automotive repair facilities, gas stations and construction companies.But his passion was still boxing.
He later turned pro boxer and still to this day is determined to win a world championship.He is a legend in his own mind.Tom later shifted gears and started managing and training boxers and then started promoting live professional boxing shows and music concerts.
Today, Tom is married with five beautiful children.He has seven brothers and sisters, a dog-named Chico, and his father still works with him everyday.
Meanwhile......was it fate?
While Derreck was working at Metropolitan Financial, (which later started a division called Metro Web, an Internet company of which Derreck spearheaded).Tom was renting office space in the same building operating his sports and entertainment promotion company.
Tom was asked to consult and coordinate a live event to promote one of Metro Web's websites.Derreck and Tom were asked to team-up and make the event a success. Still to this day, for some unknown reason, Tom and Derreck, complete opposites, hit it off immediately and became great friends, needless to say, the live event was a total success.
After the live event was over for Metro Web, Tom and Derreck decided to form a business partnership and started exploring streaming video technology.They both had the vision that someday all video would be transmitted through Internet transmission.
Derreck used his Internet experience and Tom used his entertainment and television experience and they quickly started becoming experts in streaming video technology.
They knew that their business model was ahead of the curve, but they were convinced without a doubt, that it was the future of all video transmission-the future of television.Soon your television and computer would become one device. ... Tom and Derreck bought the Internet domain names WEBPayPerView.com and WPPV.com.
At about 5:00am, January 27, 1999 Tom and Derreck started writing their business plan and strategy.The early mornings and late nights continued forever.The business plan must have changed a thousand times.The paper they used writing their business plan probably killed a small forest.But it all came together and in March of 1999 Tom and Derreck incorporated WEBPayPerView.com.
They realized that Broadband television was the future, but the general public and most industry experts still had no clue as to what Broadband was.Tom and Derreck were determined to build a company that produced revenues and earnings.They went back to basics.They continued growing the Broadband television side of the Company but also expanded the company to a content rich, full-scale production and entertainment company. In March 2001 they renovated a 2000 seat theatre in the heart of downtown phoenix and named it they WEB Theatre.The theatre gained local, regional and national media exposure. ... Tom and Derreck are still as confident and energetic about the company as ever and they still meet at the office early in the morning- not at 5am anymore , usually around 6am
