Uzbekistan targeted for takeover er… democracy

This will be interesting because the Chinese are rumored to be waiting in Kyrgyzstan which is next to Uzbekistan.

Kyrgyzstan is strategic in that it borders China and hosts both American and Russian bases.

Central Asia is full of rumors. They say that President of Kyrgyzstan Askar Akaev signed a secret deal with China, and now neither the US nor Russia can get him replaced for a man that they would want. And such attempts have already been made. It happened more than once. Both Washington and Moscow, for example, are insisting that the Kyrgyz President should not run at the elections for the fourth time.

Presumably, Beijing offered Akaev good protection in exchange for accepting 100,000 Chinese in Kyrgyzstan. China keeps its promises. Akaev keeps his promises too.

Published: 29.11.2004
UzReport, Tashkent, 29.11.2004 -- The session of the steering committee of the project “Further intensification of democratic reforms in Uzbekistan” was held on 26 November in Tashkent.

The project is being implemented by the European Commission in the country’s parliament in the framework of the EuropAid Programme, Narodnoye Slovo reported.

Head of the EuropAid’s Central Asia and Caucasus Projects Department Silva-Rodriguez, representatives of the European consortium implementing the project, as well as beneficiaries and project partners took part in the session.

The session participants discussed the main directions of joint work to be done in Oliy Majlis in the conditions of bicameral parliament. They also considered the methodology of functioning of European parliamentary systems.

They also exchanged ideas concerning new approaches to assistance to legislative process in the country. Information was delivered on other projects, implemented in Uzbekistan, and ways to cooperate with them in intensifying democratic reforms in Uzbekistan were defined.

The project is continuation of effective cooperation and provision of technical assistance by the EU to the Oliy Majlis. The project provides the succession of earlier projects in the framework of TACIS programme for democratisation.
