Ukraine supreme court calls for new runoff vote by December 26: opposition

KIEV - Ukraine's supreme court Friday annulled the results of a bitterly disputed presidential election and called for a new run-off vote with the same two candidates, which the opposition said must be held by December 26.


The court added that its decision is final and could not be appealed.

"We order the central election commission to set a date for a new runoff vote from December 5, 2004 in accordance with the law," chief justice Anatoly Yarema said.

A representative from the opposition, which had appealed the results of the November 21 election to the supreme court, said that the law stipulated holding the vote three weeks from the date announced by the judge.

"I think it'll be the 26th" of December, said Yury Kluchkovsky. - AFP
