I did not say that taxes or duties should be abolished, and minimizing tax policies is always desired, but we tax cigarettes because we think they are "dangerous", leveling the price of a commodity by an "equalizing" tax (that goes to nil if the market prices rise), is better than encouraging over production of other commodities (such as agricultural products) by price support and subsidies. Such a tax on crude will not even bring us to "equal footing" with Europe on that issue. And while I was typing, I just got the $1.50 out of CCMP, selling just above $50.
