from The Wall Street Journal

Wal-Mart Stores beat its guidance to post a 22% profit increase for the fiscal fourth quarter, but sales at the big-box retailer fell short of expectations.

Wal-Mart posted a profit of $4.63 billion, or $1.21 a share, up from $3.79 billion, or 96 cents a share, a year earlier. Excluding a tax benefit in the latest quarter and other charges, earnings from continuing operations rose to $1.17 from $1.03. In November, the company projected $1.08 to $1.12, largely below analysts' estimates at the time, which hadn't changed since.

Net sales increased 4.5% to $113.65 million while analysts predicted $114.36 billion. Gross margin rose to 24.4% from 24%.

Shares in Wal-Mart were down 1.5% at $53.25 in premarket trade.
