On Monday, Nov. 29, Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Fradkov signed a governmental resolution approving a draft agreement between Russia and Egypt on cooperation in the peaceful use of atomic energy. The news was reported by the Russian government’s press service and quoted by Interfax agency. Mikhail Fradkov is in Egypt on an official visit.
Russia and Egypt will cooperate in fundamental and applied research and development, design, construction, operation and modification of industrial and research nuclear reactors, desalters and accelerators.
Russia already cooperates closely with Iran on atomic energy projects. Russian specialists are building a nuclear power plant in the Iranian town of Bushehr. Russia has been strongly criticized for this cooperation by the United States which fears Iran will use the power station for the development of a nuclear bomb. To assuage fears Russian authorities have signed a bilateral agreement with Iran about the return of all spent nuclear fuel from Iran.
