" ... especially when you're dealing with a company whose decision could impact a lot of lives if the product doesn't work properly, their employess aren't trained to use it properly, or if they feel making their progress known publicly can somehow be used as an advantage by terrorists."
The electronic scanner will impact a lot of lives if it doesn't work properly. If an individual is concealing an explosive material and the scanner does not detect explosive material, that individual boards the plane and a lot of lives may be impacted. If the scanner finds a suspect material, the person and material will be tested further. Testing may take a few minutes with the Identa product, or it could take several hours (or more) if sent to the lab. That person is unlikely to board the plane if he is suspected of concealing explosives. The Identa product has only been promoted as a back-up to the scanner, it is not promoted as the primary detection system.
Don't you think that making explosive detection devices public information would be a deterrent to terrorists? Why would you not want that information be made public? I'd rather that information be made public if for nothing else than to ease the public's mind and to give terrorists second thoughts about attempting to bring explosive devices on board.
If you didn't know a store was under video surveilance one might attempt to shoplift. If one was aware that a store was under surveilance, one would be less inclined to shop lift. Why do you think they put those video surveilance signs at the entrance? Publication is a deterrent.
