The United States is ‘Lord of the Flies’.

The warmongering and bullying of this administration which are in reality the signatures of impotent men have permeated the fabric of our society.

Studies have been done on the effects of watching the sometimes violent Saturday morning cartoons on children.

The time period spent on watching these violent programs on the television is directly influential on whether or not violence in the media causes certain behavioural changes in the viewer. “Viewing violent programs raises rates of aggression among children who are heavy viewers.” (DeFleur 1998:455) In a study conducted, such a result was concluded. This study was set up in order to discover what the effects of watching Saturday morning cartoons on a group of five-year-old would be. The children were placed in a laboratory and exposed to 30 minutes of cartoons. After the period of cartoon-viewing, the five-year-olds were sent out to play for an hour while researchers counted the number of aggressive acts performed against each other in this time frame. “As a control measure, you might take a similar group of children but let them watch Sesame Street or some other non-violent program, or not expose them to TV at all.” (Fedler 1978:55) Comparison between the amount of aggressive acts performed by this group of children and that of the group which was exposed to the cartoons was then taken as a method to decipher the effects of exposure to TV violence. “Most of them do demonstrate a higher level of aggressive behaviour immediately after exposure. There is certainly evidence that children use TV as a model for play activities. But after a short time, something like 30 minutes, or if some activity like a break for milk and cookies intervenes, then the measurable effect is lost.

We, as adults, are continually being inundated by sounds and images of Bush’s world war that is to last for decades. Bush’s battle is our Saturday morning cartoon. Yet man does not have the integrity of will to withstand an onslaught that lasts for so long a period. Our very spirits are in jeopardy.

As years pass we will lose most of what is good and sink into the darkness of our primordial animal instincts as we more and more come to emulate the Bush/neocon behavior.

Drinking is an addiction as is religion to an extreme. If Bush had a healthy sense of who he is as a man, if he possessed real self-esteem and if he were truly a spiritual person some of the atrocities we have seen and the horrors we are about to witness would not be.

Although we have become a religious nation we are losing our more important spiritual selves. This was graphically demonstrated at the Pistons/Pacers basketball game last night and highlights the difference between religion and spirituality. Thus a nation with a burgeoning religious population exhibits symptoms of an ungodly nature.

Religion cannot save us, spirituality can.
