they stopped making the good paint in the 90's

the EPA standards for solids and other crap was removed if you recall, I assume you're old enuff to remember the lead removal days.. they said back then the material quality was going to be effected. Most paint jobs are 2 to 3 coats with a good solid undercoat with a good primer. this is what I have been going thru for many years on various projects on in door and out door products.. gotta spend more money on quantity to do the same job and am willing to go to the xpense for my own walls etc however when hiring a painter to come and do the job I have seen almost all painters being calle back due to complaints from home owners or commercial. The manufactures made out big time and the painters of the world took it to the chin.
