CEO Ellison Sets New Course as Oracle Gains Control of Sun

Mr. Ellison, who built his fortune selling computer software and shunning hardware, says Oracle's mission will change significantly. He said he plans to transform Oracle into a company that is as serious about server systems—

...Oracle will focus on selling such combination systems to businesses. Mr. Ellison said they will cost less and perform better than systems that use parts from different companies. He said that Oracle will announce two such systems in the next year. He declined to provide details, except to say he expects systems that combine hardware and software to become a multibillion-dollar market.

...Oracle will no longer emphasize low-end commodity server systems similar to ones made by Hewlett-Packard Co. and Dell Inc.—a market Sun entered late and in which it has failed to win a large share. The company will retain high-end product lines based on Sun's internally developed Sparc chips, Mr. Ellison said.

...Sun CEO Jonathan Schwartz and some other top Sun executive won't have roles at Oracle, according to people familiar with the matter. Mr. Schwartz couldn't be reached for comment.
