I've seen it time and again. Short term profits at any cost. New manager comes in and burns the physical plant by deferring all maintenance. Then something breaks and he has to fix it. His profit number dips, so they fire him. New manager comes in and he turns in good numbers by deferring all maintenance. Then something breaks and he is forced to fix it to stay operational. His profit number dips so they fire him. New manager comes in.... And so on.
But how do you go back to the corporations and say that those profits were just the money you saved by dumping garbage in the river?? How do you say the profit was just the money you saved not keeping the place up. How do you count up the guys on the street who were injured for lack of good safety gear, or from using unsafe equipment that should have been replaced a decade before? Profit is the money removed from the revenue stream to satisfy the corporate officers and stock holders with evidence that the company is doing well and justifies the executive pay.
But companies that are GOOD CITIZENS will not sacrifice the business for profits. They will not sacrifice the economy or the ecology, or the environment or the community in the name of profits.
