A foreign submarine sneaked into Israeli waters last week and escaped without being identified, a military spokeswoman said today.
The mystery craft was discovered within three miles of Nahariya, a Mediterranean coastal town near the border with Lebanon.
“The navy spotted and tracked last week an underwater target which was identified as a submarine,” the spokeswoman said. “After it was spotted and tracked, the submarine left.”
She could not say to which country the intruder belonged.
Defence publications list Lebanon as having no submarines, while Syria’s three are believed to be unserviceable.
Of Israel’s close neighbours that leaves Egypt as a possible candidate, said defence analyst Joseph Alpher.
