The premise of Derek Lowe’s blog is that GSK was conned by some fast talking Harvard guys at Sirtis

I certainly didn't get that out of the blog post. I interpretted it as just a statement of technical oversight which Derek described using 'intentional' language (as humans often do even when there clearly couldn't be intent).
