Mainly it us just a matter of maximizing your variance.
Think of the extreme cases, It is not hard at all to pick a stock that doubles in a year, good luck on that with the S&P 500 though.
In this type contest, you are best going with just a single stock. But this contest didn't allow it, so you concentrate as much as the rules allow, which is DDs 4@20. 4@5
Along these lines though, I am somewhat surprised by DDs pick of MON. I like the stock very much in the real world, but I would think the beta is way too (unless the SI contest is smallish, and it doesn't take a miracle to win).
