The Center on Conscience & War is an active lobby group that lobbies Congress on the rights of conscientious objectors (CO). We lobby on behalf of COs in the military and COs facing the draft and draft registration.

Military Conscientious Objectors

Since the United States military is considered to be an "all-volunteer" force, it is assumed that there are no COs in the Armed Forces. However, there are many who join without realizing what the military is really about. In fact, even the military recognizes that there those who are conscientiously opposed to participating in war, which is why it is current Pentagon policy to discharge those who are "conscientiously opposed to participating in war in any form."

It is important to note is that it is currently only Pentagon "policy" to grant a CO discharge, which means that that Pentagon can suspend this policy at any time. The policy was, in fact, suspended during the Persian Gulf war in 1991. Because of this, thousands of COs went to jail or went AWOL because their conscience would not allow them to go to war.

Although a Military Conscientious Objector Act was introduced in 1992 by Rep. Ron Dellums (D-CA), currently there is no such bill in Congress. It is essential that this bill be introduced and passed by Congress so that COs in the military will have the right for an honorable discharge once they realize that their conscience will no longer allow them to participate in war.
