Microsoft has quietly released an iPhone app for its Bing search engine. Bing, which is also available for Windows and BlackBerry phones, features voice-activated search, as well as maps, directions, news, business and movie listings.

Bing is available from the Apple App Store for free.

Bing has been a bright spot for Microsoft, taking 9.9 percent of the search market in October, according to ComScore. Google still takes the king’s portion of the market with 65.6 percent of searches; however, month-over-month figures show Bing continues to gain traction.

Microsoft’s search engine joins a growing number of general search engines for the iPhone. Beyond just Google, mobile search has evolved into a sophisticated technology. Augmented reality search engines such as Layar and Yelp allow users to search via a layer of information that is superimposed over the “real world” via their mobile’s camera.

Meanwhile, mobile users can now search the world around them by scanning a 2D barcode. Google recently announced that it will be sending 2D barcode window decals to 100,000 of the most searched for local businesses across the country, as part of a new initiative called “Google Places.”
