Absolutely too funny. You actually copied that right from one of the articles I read or one of the videos I've seen about the towers' construction.

Might explain the different sizes. And I seriously doubt those were the first to fail.

Yes, the steel columns were more 'robust' at the bottom. And yes, I seriously doubt that the ones I just posted were the first to fail. But as you probably know by now, you were incorrect in assuming that each column was tapered.
