Nope, I wasn't thinking of the floor trusses. Here's another column without the taper. Perhaps you'll notice the difference between the one I put in my last post and this one. They were both supposed to be the same at the end (not tapered), but they ended up differently. That's why FEMA couldn't figure out what happened. Did you check out A&E's website? I'm thinking that you didn't.

These taper to practically nothing at either end and would be the weak link in a fire.
