Maybe a part of the developing process is to get a warm body in the office to answer phone calls. If the midwest office is still functional it would be the time to remove the 1980's answering machine off the kitchen table at Sally's home. At the home office in NJ maybe get a professional answering service to route the calls to them rather to Gil's cell phone. This appears nothing more to me than a loan officer selling home loans or refinancing packages. I hope when the curtain opens again it will be a different picture than what I have witnessed.
