The preferred hang onto the stocks at face and receive the divs every year. They can sell the prefs at market price if they so choose. The prefs will be valable based on the interest rate that JPMC will be paying. I have 1500 WAMPQ shares and would take the JPMC assumption of the prefs in a deal in a heart beat.
