I mid September of '05 my buddy book a ride from Portland to Bend, OR and back. With a over nite stay in Bend. Room and all meals included. Coat $750 per person...and worth every $!!!
We had seats in a Dome car, it was privitaly owned. The owner was aboard too. It rents for $4,500 per day...and can be hooked to any pasanger train. With a minium of 3 days.
The 9 car train was pulled by this GREAT Steam Engine, housed in Portland and it also pulled the Freedom Train in 1976/77.

When my family moved from Salt Lake City in 6-44 to the SF Bay area. I was 8 years old. We came by train, Steam Engine of course.
My folks bought a house in San Mateo. It's about 15 miles south of SF and we lived just 3 blocks from the SP tracks to SF.
Those were THE DAYS!!!...))
