i studied the ability of cord blood banks to provide 4/6 hla matches to a popultion.
the data is out there. the dutch have a good genetics site on the web.
the data is both simple and illuminating:
the more heterogenous the population is the greater the size of a cord blood bank
in a small village in russia or ireland where there has not been crossbreeding the number is low.
in japan the number is low. (10000 to 20000)
in holland among white christian dutch the number is low
in every major city it is very high
in the usa it is generally high
in american blacks it is quite high
basically if you re a hybrid, your chances of finding another hybrid are lower than if you are not a hybrid.
but i dont know the evolution of very early stage embryonic hla or t- cell recognition development. I suspect this is exactly why Varmus wants to study it.
but I also doubt that somebody else does not know this now since experiments have been performed in last 4 years. I am just not up on it
