nothing ever changes - re: your piece from the la times ..it's amazing that we hear the same arguments from every place in the world, no matter what country - the rich land owning class + the big & small business folks start with the same whines and amazingly none of it ever materializes..at least not in our country ...

"It is oppression when 30% of society that is rich and middle class receives 70% of the subsidies. This must stop,"

the WHINES -

It offers no breaks to the rich and middle class but extends certain subsidies to the poor

he fears subsidy cuts will leave him with fewer customers and higher bills.

the new plan will further damage the economy by triggering inflation and reducing retail spending and investment.

Re-targeting subsidies, especially petrol, will diminish the purchasing power of the middle class and potential investors and weaken the private sector,"

"The overhaul plan aims to help the poor at the expense of the rich,"

"It looks like we'll have more expensive water, electricity, natural gas and sewage costs for our shops and apartments, so cheating and manipulating the meters will start," he said. "Be sure we will find ways to cheat and manipulate the meters so that they read as much as we can afford to pay."

... we hear this same thing here, every time dems want to raise the minimum wage and raise taxes . God, I can just imagine what would happen if the gov stopped giving these subsidies to the private sector businesses here ...

The same arguments whether in the US, Honduras, Iran, Venezuela .. . everywhere - the ruling class does not want to share and they are willing to go to all most any lengths to keep it the way it is ...

re: the sanctions - I despise sanctions .. they always hurt the vulnerable poor, minimum wage workers/families the most . ! look at the result of our sanctions against Iraq !

it seems some things never change ...
